Overview
Manaslu Base Camp hiking is a well-known hiking route in Nepal’s untouched natural paradise. Located near the border between Nepal and Tibet. It was formally launched as an adventurous walking tour for tourists in 1992. Because special hiking permits are required, fewer tourists visited the Manaslu base camp trip. Manaslu base camp hikes offer a diverse culture, tradition, adventure, scenic beauty, and rural civilization. The newly opened path covers the entire Manaslu ridge, allowing visitors to explore Nepal’s natural and cultural variety. Located in Gorkha district, approximately 64 kilometers east of Annapurna. The terrain follows the old path of the Budi Gandaki River. Many peaks over 6,500m and a few over 7,000m are visible en route. The terrain cuts through numerous scattered communities inhabited by various ethnic groups.

This adventure to the Manaslu Circuit begins in Arughat, a large town within the district of Gorkha near the Buri-Gandaki River. The drive passes through farm villages and towns as it approaches Arughat. From here, take a jeep or other vehicle for a few hours on a remote road to Soti-Khola, a small rural community adjacent to the Soti-khola, for an overnight stay.
Our first day’s journey begins at Soti-Khola and continues upstream along the Buri Gandaki River, passing Nuali-khola with fantastic waterfall views before arriving at Machha-Khola for the night. Machha-Khola translates to “stream with fishes.
After Macha-Khola, travel to Khorla Beshi, a small farm town, and then follow a meandering road to Tatopani “Hot Spring,” where you can relax in a hot bath. After a delightful break, continue walking through Dovan and Yaruphant villages until you arrive at Jagat village, a medium big village with shops and stores, after over a short suspension bridge.
From Jagat, the walk leaps higher, following the Buri Gandkai River, then across small farm villages of Sidibas Bazaar, then a short ascent with a downhill to pass a bridge to touch Nagjet, then move up to Philim village, a large scattered out farm village, from Philim trek onwards through terraces of golden wheat and barley, as the climb extends a rocky ridge top and into bamboo forest area, finally ending at Dyang village for an overnight stay.
From Dyang, steadily ascend to the upper elevations along the Buri Gandaki River. Namrung is located at a higher altitude of 8,727 feet. Some elements of the mountain range can be seen from this location.
Today, we’ll reach a height of over 3000 meters. The beautiful Ganesh Himal (7,422m) and Himachali (7,863m) serve as guides for today’s expedition. Ascending towards the lovely village of Lihi, going via several passes. The scenery falls to Lho via prayer flags and stone cranes, then continues on to Shayla. As we approach Samagaon, our day stroll comes to an end.
The most important day of our trip is today. We make our way to the Manaslu Base Camp. We returned to Samagaon after exploring the Manaslu base camp. Our expedition begins on a rocky route that winds past stone cranes and steep peaks. Pilgrims frequently walk the Samagaon pathways, chanting their traditional tunes. Samagaon reaches a height of 3000 metres. You can visit the Gompa, which is bordered by stunning views of Mt.Manasulu (8,163m) and Ngadi chuli (7,871mtr).
A gompa is a Buddhist artifact from an earlier generation. We might not be able to find any more tea shops as we continue our journey higher.
Lunch should be brought with you. We return to Samagaon after our upward exploration. We cross Birendra Lake on our way down.
The morning stroll will lead you to Samdo village, which is located on the Tibet border route. For centuries, locals have traveled to Tibet to do trade. There are many Chinese goods available here. Our morning hike starts with a steady ascent through desolate, arid land with views of beautiful peaks, finally leading us to Samdo, where we’ll spend the night.
Today is a short day hike to Larkya phedi / Dharmasala, passing rivers and traveling towards more dry and barren country. The trek to Larkya phedi is not difficult except for high altitude walking with a few short ups and downs, and then finishing the morning walk at Larkya phedi, at the base of Larkya-la pass. After lunch, the afternoon is free for a short hike.
Starting early in the morning to reach the top of Larkya-la pass at 5,214 meters, the trip takes you on a long, steep ascent with stunning views of the surrounding hills and valley, including Mt. Manaslu, Larkya peak, Bouddha Himal, Himalchuli, and Peak 29. The pass’s summit ridge is draped with Buddhist prayer flags after a tough climb to the top. After a short break and some spectacular views, a long descent leads back into the lush forested area of Bimthang, where you will spend the night after a hard day of hiking.
Following a strenuous walk the day before, enjoy a leisurely stroll downward today. It starts with a gentle climb through rice fields to the little Karcha La pass, then descends through fir and rhododendron forests to Tilje.
Cross the suspension bridge across the Dudh Khola and descend through Tilje village on a beautiful stone-paved trail. The trail then ascends to Thonje village, passing through a chorten-shaped archway. Proceed to Dharapani, then Karte village. We’ll head to Tal village after crossing the Marsyandi Khola bridge.
After breakfast, drive for a few hours on a gravel road through several ranch villages to the large town of Beshishar, the Lamjung district headquarters, then onto the solid path to Kathmandu with a fascinating scenic drive, finally arriving in Kathmandu after completing this mesmerizing awesome adventure.
Leisure day in Kathmandu, followed by a farewell meal and celebration. You can ask your guide to take you on a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley. On this day, you can visit the valley’s numerous museums, including the Narayanhiti Museum, which was previously the residence of Nepal’s last king. You can also visit the hilltop of Nagarkot. After exploring the valley’s world heritage sites, you will enjoy a farewell supper with your Nepali friends and guide. FAQs
The best times to trek to Manaslu Base Camp are during the pre-monsoon (March to May) and post-monsoon (September to November) seasons. These periods offer the most favorable weather conditions, with clear skies, stable temperatures, and excellent visibility. Spring (pre-monsoon) provides warmer temperatures and blooming flora, while autumn (post-monsoon) offers crisp air and clear mountain views. Trekking during these times helps avoid the heavy rains and snow of the monsoon season and the extreme cold of winter.
Food on the Manaslu Base Camp Trek includes a mix of traditional Nepali and Tibetan dishes. Meals typically consist of dal bhat (rice and lentil soup), momo (dumplings), noodle soups, and vegetable curries. Some teahouses may offer a selection of Western-style dishes. The food provided is designed to be nutritious and energy-rich, supporting you through the trek’s physical demands.
The Manaslu region is home to a variety of wildlife adapted to its diverse environments. You may spot animals such as the Himalayan tahr, blue sheep, and possibly the elusive snow leopard. The region also supports various bird species, including the Himalayan griffon and pheasants. The trek’s natural beauty and wildlife add to its appeal, providing opportunities for nature enthusiasts.
Minimizing your environmental impact is crucial while trekking in the Manaslu region. Follow Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash, avoiding single-use plastics, and respecting local wildlife. Stick to established trails to prevent damage to vegetation and habitats. Use biodegradable soaps and shampoos to avoid contaminating water sources. Responsible trekking practices help preserve the natural beauty of the region.
If you have specific dietary needs or allergies, inform your trekking agency well in advance. Most agencies can accommodate dietary restrictions, such as vegetarian or vegan diets or allergies to certain foods. Communicate your requirements to your guide at the start of the trek to ensure suitable food arrangements. Bringing along some specialized food items or snacks can also help meet your dietary needs throughout the trek.
Staying connected during the Manaslu Base Camp Trek can be challenging due to the remote nature of the area. Some teahouses and lodges may offer basic communication options like landline phones or limited internet access, though these services can be sporadic and costly. Satellite phones are a more reliable option for communication, and some trekking agencies offer satellite phone services for emergencies. Inform your family and friends about potential communication limitations before you depart.
