The first destination on today’s itinerary is Bhaktapur, a fascinating and historic Newari town recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bhaktapur showcases the remarkable architectural prowess of the Newari people, characterized by pagoda roofs and a harmonious blend of wood, mudbrick, and copper.

The title of “Malla” was inherited by the rulers of the Malla Dynasty, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square features a spacious arena traditionally used for wrestling matches. Throughout the city, intricately carved statues of wrestlers serve as iconic symbols and are revered as protectors of sacred temples.

As you ascend out of the valley, the road to Nagarkot meanders past terraced farms and verdant forests.

The journey from Nagarkot to Sanga Bhanjyang, spanning 19 kilometers, winds through terraced hills adorned with rice farms. Upon arrival in Sanga, you’ll be greeted by a towering 143-foot statue of Lord Shiva, currently holding the title of the tallest in the world.

Following a steep ascent for approximately half an hour, the trail levels out, meandering along ridgelines offering panoramic views of rice fields, farmland, the town of Banepa, and, on clear days, uninterrupted vistas of the Himalayas. These paths are frequented by villagers and retain their authentic charm, inviting curious glances from locals you encounter along the way.

The hike culminates in Panauti, a picturesque Newari town enveloped by verdant rice fields, renowned for its impeccably preserved Newari architecture, making it one of Nepal’s most cherished settlements.

After leaving Panauti, it’s a brief journey to reconnect with the Arniko Highway, leading you 35 kilometers down into the Kathmandu Valley and ultimately into the bustling city.
