Overview
Cho Oyu, at 8,188 metres (26,864 feet), is the world’s sixth tallest mountain and is part of the Greater Himalayas, which connects the central Asian plateau to the Indian subcontinent. In 1954, a joint expedition from Austria and Tibet suggested the first ascent of Cho Oyu, which has the finest safety record of any peak above 8,000 metres. Climbing Cho Oyu is an attainable goal for beginning climbers interested in climbing an 8,000m summit. Our Cho Oyu adventure begins with a sightseeing tour in the gorgeous Kathmandu valley. We next travel to Tibet via Zhangmu and proceed to Nyalam and Old Tingri, where we begin our trip to the Tibetan Base Camp and establish our climbing camps. The hike offers amazing views of several Himalayan peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. In addition to the climbing experience, the Cho Oyu trip introduces hikers to Tibet’s rich historical history.
Top Highlights of Cho Oyu

Itinerary
You will arrive in Kathmandu valley at the Tribhuvan International Airport, and our agents from Gravity Expedition will be there to pick you up. They will take you to your hotel, where you can rest and enjoy a delicious and traditional Nepali meal. In the evening, you have the option to attend a fascinating folk cultural performance.
Following breakfast the following morning, you will go for a full-day sightseeing trip of the Kathmandu Valley. You may see Swyambhunath, a very old temple that is essentially classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the revered Pashupatinath Temple.
Highlights of our guided trip include the largest Buddhist stupa at Boudhanath and the exquisite artwork and old architecture of Kathmandu Durbar Square, which showcase the ancient culture of Nepal.
Patan City’s historic architecture and renowned fine arts will charm you on a visit. You will have time to explore the neighborhood, eat supper, and maybe take a leisurely stroll down the well-known streets when you get back to your hotel. A traditional Nepalese dinner at the Nepali Cultural Restaurant rounds off the day.
We spend the day drafting final documentation, inspecting gear and equipment, and so forth. If you forget something before heading for the mountain, you can go shopping one last time. Chinese visas to enter Tibet will be obtained from the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. We will also be introduced to fellow trip members and guides. Overnight at the hotel.
Today, we fly to one of the world’s highest capitals: Lhasa, Tibet. We enjoy the breathtaking vistas of the Himalaya, including Everest, Makalu, Kangchenjunga, and the Tibetan lowlands. Upon arrival in Lhasa, we will be greeted and led to a high-quality hotel in the city center. We use Lhasa as our base for acclimatization to the high Tibetan altitude.
While adjusting to the high altitude, we tour major landmarks in Lhasa, including the Dalai Lama’s Potala Palace. Lhasa living surely provides views into one of the best-preserved old cultural heritages.
Today, we depart from Lhasa for Shigatse, Tibet’s second largest city. We even reach the banks of the Tsang Po, which eventually becomes the Brahmaputra River in India. We continue driving upstream for a while before turning southwest through bleak desert-like regions. Overnight stay at a Shigatse hotel.
While traveling over the Tibetan route, views of the Himalaya open, revealing a stunning panorama of peaks including Everest. We spend the night at a hotel outside the main town of Xegar. If time allows, we will visit the downtown of Xegar and its hilltop monastery.
We acclimatize well before ascending toward the Chinese base camp. At this point, we visit the main town and take a leisurely climb up to the mountaintop monastery.
We further continue our drive to the Chinese base camp. While turning south along the bumpy track, the road leads us to the road-head below Cho Oyu.
Today will be a crucial day for sifting through all loads. The yaks arrive in the afternoon. Yaks transport our loads to the base camp the next day.
We continue our walk up the lengthy valley to base camp. To allow for proper acclimatization, we stay three nights at intermediate camps at 5,200 and 5,450 meters before returning to base camp. Move into the base camp. We spend the afternoon preparing climbing gear for usage on the mountain.
At this point, we attempt the lower half of the mountain on the first day. We aim to climb as high as possible to have a good look at the path and the mountain’s conditions. In the evening, we return to base camp. After sufficient acclimatization, we climb higher to reach Camps 1 and 2. After a decent rest at base camp, we make our best try at summit bids. Return to the base camp by day 40.
Next, we hike back to the roadhead with yaks carrying our equipment. This journey will take us by road. We spent the final night in tents.
The two days of road travel will take us to Kathmandu. On the first day, we drive to Zhangmu and then pass into Nepal. Another 6-hour trip from the border will take us all the way to Kathmandu.
Overnight in Hotel.
Leisure day in Kathmandu, followed by a farewell meal and celebration. You can ask your guide to take you on a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley. On this day, you can visit the valley’s numerous museums, including the Narayanhiti Museum, which was previously the residence of Nepal’s last king. You can also visit the hilltop of Nagarkot. After exploring the valley’s world heritage sites, you will enjoy a farewell supper with your Nepali friends and guide. You and your guide may even decide to extend your stay to include a Chitwan jungle safari, rafting activities, and other activities.
Our representative of Gravity Expedition will accompany you to Tribhuvan International Airport as you prepare to board your flight back home. While you travel home, you can start thinking about your next adventure here in Nepal, and rest assured that Gravity Expedition will be there to provide excellent service for your future endeavors.

FAQs
Main risks include altitude sickness, frostbite, hypothermia, and avalanches. These risks can be mitigated by proper acclimatization, using appropriate gear, and following safety protocols set by your guide and expedition team.
Cho Oyu is the sixth highest mountain in the world, standing at 8,188 meters (26,864 feet). It is popular due to its relatively less technical climbing route compared to other 8,000-meter peaks, making it a favored choice for climbers looking to tackle a high-altitude summit.
At Base Camp, climbers stay in communal tents with basic amenities. Higher camps consist of expedition tents equipped with essential facilities for climbers, such as sleeping bags, stoves, and cooking equipment.
Communication facilities are generally limited. Satellite phones can be used for essential communication, and some Base Camps may offer satellite internet services, though internet access is often sparse.
