Overview
Mount Api Himal, standing at an impressive height of 7,132 meters (23,399 feet), is located in a remote and inaccessible region of western Nepal. It lies between the Tibetan Plateau and the Indian subcontinent, within the Humla District of Nepal. The first successful ascent of Api Himal was accomplished by a Japanese Expedition Team from Doshisha Alpine Society in 1960. Additionally, on December 24, 1983, Tadeusz Piotrowski and Andrzej Bieluń from Poland made the mountain’s first winter hike.
The expedition to Api Himal begins from Gokuleshwor and follows a less-frequented trail, leading through distant and quaint villages. The trek takes adventurers through unexplored and serene forests, passing by Karkare, Chiureni, Makarighat, and Lwathi villages. Upon reaching the base camp of Api Himal, the expedition team makes necessary arrangements to establish higher camps above the base camp to facilitate the climb.
Beyond the thrill of the climbing experience, the Api Himal expedition offers a unique opportunity to explore a less-known and remote area of Nepal. The region’s remoteness is complemented by its ethnic diversity, providing stunning mountain vistas and tranquil wilderness. Visible from the peak are neighboring mountains such as Rajamba Peak (6,537m), Kappa Chuli Peak (6,850m), and breathtaking views of Mt. Nanda Devi (7,817m).
Moreover, the Api Himal expedition offers a chance to interact with the diverse mixed community residing in this region, including Brahmins, Chhetris, Maharas, Bohoras, Thekares, Jhakaris, and Lohars. This aspect provides a cultural enrichment to complement the mountain adventure, making the expedition a truly memorable and enriching experience.

On the opposite bank of the river, you’ll witness funeral and cremation rituals performed in accordance with Hindu traditions.
Continuing the journey towards the northeast, you’ll arrive at Bouddhanath Stupa, affectionately known as “Little Tibet” due to its strong Tibetan influence in culture, traditions, and Buddhism.
