Overview
Khaptad National Park is one of Nepal’s non-tourism national parks, with little visitors. Khaptad National Park is located in the Seti area and borders the districts of Doti, Bajura, Bajhang, and Achham. The park has an area of 225 square kilometers and was established in far western Nepal in 1984. In addition to its natural beauty, the Khaptad National Park is a popular religious destination since it is the birthplace of the Hindu mystic Khaptad Swami, also known as Khaptad Baba, a famous recluse. For many years, Khaptad Baba lived here and discovered numerous medicinal herbal plants. The national park, which has 224 therapeutic herb species, is referred to as a living herb garden. It presently has 567 types, accounting for 11% of all Nepal’s flowering plants. The hills are dominated by superb subtropical Chir pine forest at lower altitudes, and subalpine fir, hemlock, oak, and rhododendron plantations at higher elevations. During the spring and summer, the meadows are covered in flowers. With 270 kinds of birds, the park offers excellent bird-watching opportunities, including Impeyan pheasants, partridges, flycatchers, bulbuls, cuckoos, and eagles. Khaptad National Park also supports a diverse diversity of species, including barking deer, wild boar, Himalayan black bear, yellow-throated marten, rhesus macaque, and langur monkeys. The Khaptad Lake and the stunning view of the Api and Saipal Himal ranges are particularly appealing to visitors. The largest carnival, known as the Ganga Dashahara Carnival, takes place in Khaptad on the 14th of the Nepali month, which falls in the last week of May.
