Ganesh Himal Expedition
Ganesh Himal, standing at an impressive height of 7,422 meters (24,350 feet), is a renowned adventure destination located in the north-central region of Nepal, within the Himalayas. On a clear day, this majestic mountain can be easily seen from Kathmandu. Situated approximately 70 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu, it is separated from the Langtang area by the Trishuli Gandaki range. The highest peak in this range is Ganesh I, also known as Yangra.
The name “Ganesh Himal” is derived from the Hindu deity Ganesha, often depicted as an elephant. The south face of Pabil, also known as Ganesh IV, bears a resemblance to an elephant, with a ridge resembling an elephant’s trunk. The first successful ascent of Ganesh I took place on October 6th, 1955, led by esteemed guides Raymond Lambert, Pierre Vittoz, Eric Gauchar, and Claude Kogan.
Embarking on a Ganesh Himal expedition is a month-long trek through the breathtaking snow-capped regions of the High Himalayas in Nepal. The journey commences with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, followed by a trek through diverse landscapes, including lush green forests and snow-covered areas. Along the way, you’ll also encounter numerous cultural and ancient tourist attractions before reaching the summit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
A: The duration of each day’s trek is best measured in time, usually taking about 5 to 7 hours for each full day, which covers a distance of approximately 12 to 18 kilometers in hilly terrain. The morning walks typically start between 7:30 to 8:00 am, while the afternoon walks begin from 1 to 3 or 4 pm. Additionally, for treks that extend beyond 8 days, there is a planned rest period of either half a day or a full day.
A: The majority of the trails used for trekking in the Himalayas have existed for centuries. Due to the rugged terrain of the Himalayas, the trails often involve greater exposure to heights as the gradient becomes steeper. Additionally, in areas where the trek follows rivers, bridges are built to allow the trail to switch sides. These bridges are constructed using cables, wires, and planks, and they are designed to be strong enough to support heavily laden pack animals during the journey.
A: Over the past ten years, hygiene standards during trekking have significantly improved. With local knowledge, it is now easier to select lodges that maintain high hygiene standards. When camping in tents, meals are prepared with great care and attention to hygiene. To ensure safety, fruits and vegetables are soaked in iodine before preparation.
Most lodges offer boiled and filtered water, which is generally safe to drink. However, for extra precaution, it is suggested to add a drop of iodine to the water. The use of bottled water is discouraged due to environmental concerns. Instead, trekkers are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle to minimize waste and to take advantage of the safe water provided by the lodges.
