Overview
Tilicho Peak, located in the Annapurna District to the north of Manang, was discovered in 1950 during an expedition led by Maurice Herzog while searching for Annapurna I. The first successful ascent of Tilicho Peak (7,134m/23,406ft) was achieved by French climber Emanuel Schmutz in 1979, using the Northwest shoulder route.
Compared to other mountains, Mount Tilicho is considered slightly challenging to climb. There are two routes to reach the base camp. One option is through the Marsyangdi valley, and the other involves crossing the Mesokanto Pass (5,300m) in the Kali Gandaki valley. From the top of the Mesokanto pass, trekkers can enjoy a serene view of Tilicho Lake (4,800m) and several other mountains.
The Tilicho Peak base camp is located near the 5,200m high Tilicho Dam. The ascent from the base camp to Camp I (5,800m/19,029 ft) is quite steep. Camp I is situated on a shelf just above a 45-degree mixed rock and ice field under the Northwest arm. Moving further, Camp II (6,100m/20,013 ft) is positioned on the shoulder of the mountain. Beyond Camp II, the path leads directly to a 60-degree slope, culminating at the summit of Tilicho Peak.
It is crucial to exercise caution while climbing due to the potential risk of avalanches on this route. Careful and deliberate steps are necessary to ensure a safe and successful ascent.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Tilicho Peak has officially been summited only via the northwest shoulder. This climbing route is the standard and most commonly used route to reach the summit. However, it’s important to note that mountaineering and climbing are dynamic and evolving fields, and new routes or variations may be attempted by experienced climbers in the future. As of now, the northwest shoulder remains the established and recognized route for climbing Tilicho Peak.
Climbing Tilicho Peak is a serious and challenging expedition, graded at D+ (Fitness level). It is crucial not to underestimate the difficulty and physical demands of this climb. Aspiring climbers must have prior high-altitude experience, with at least one ascent of a 7000m peak or an 8000m+ peak anywhere in the world.
The grading of mountains is based on technical and physical difficulties, and for Tilicho Peak, climbers need to be in their best physical fitness shape. Training and preparation are vital for a successful expedition.
We highly recommend focusing on endurance, core strength, and overall physical fitness. Engaging in regular aerobic exercises like long-distance running (around 20km) 3 to 4 times a week, cycling for 1 to 2 hours, and hiking with added weight (around 15-20kgs) to simulate high-altitude conditions are some suggested training activities.
Strength building and muscle endurance training are also crucial. Kettlebell routines can be highly effective for this purpose. Additionally, climbing smaller peaks to test yourself and gain experience is invaluable preparation before embarking on the main Tilicho Peak expedition.
It is advised to start your training at least 6 to 12 months before your planned climbing departure to ensure you are adequately prepared for the challenges that await you on Tilicho Peak. Your past climbing experiences, knowledge, and physical fitness will play a significant role in the successful completion of this expedition.
During the hike to the base camp, most of the meals will be prepared in the tea houses along the trail. However, once we reach the Tilicho base camp, we will have our own base camp station. Our base camp kitchen is top-notch, and our skilled chef will surprise you with the delicious and nutritious meals they prepare at such a high altitude. Throughout the climbing period, our base camp kitchen staff will continue to provide food for all climbers.
In the high altitudes, the extreme cold weather can affect your appetite, and your body may naturally resist eating. It’s essential to force yourself to eat, starting with a few bites, and gradually your body will adapt and accept the food. To cater to individual preferences, we also provide packed dried meals, giving clients other options if they are not interested in the cooked meals.
Hydration is crucial at high altitudes, so we strongly advise all our clients to drink 4-6 liters of water daily. Staying properly hydrated will also aid in acclimatization. To ensure clean water, we recommend carrying hydration tablets or filtration bottles with you.
During the expedition, it is essential to avoid smoking and alcohol intake. While you may notice some of our experienced guiding leaders smoking or drinking, please remember that they are professionals who have adapted well to such environments. For climbers on an adventure holiday, it’s best to refrain from these habits to ensure your safety and well-being during the expedition.
Absolutely, having insurance cover is essential for any trek or expedition, especially in remote and high-altitude regions like Tilicho Peak. No matter how well-prepared and experienced you are, there are always unforeseen circumstances and risks involved in mountaineering. Altitude sickness, sudden illnesses, accidents, or other unexpected events can occur, and having insurance provides you with financial protection and peace of mind.
Insurance should cover various aspects, including emergency medical evacuation, medical treatment, trip cancellations, and trip interruptions. In case of any emergencies or medical issues during the expedition, having insurance can make a significant difference in getting timely and appropriate medical care and evacuation.
Before embarking on the Tilicho Peak expedition or any high-altitude adventure, ensure that your insurance policy specifically covers mountaineering and high-altitude activities. Additionally, read the terms and conditions of the insurance policy carefully to understand the coverage limits and any exclusions.
Remember, safety should always be a top priority, and having insurance is a responsible and wise choice to ensure you are adequately protected throughout your journey.
