Overview

Tilicho Peak, located in the Annapurna District to the north of Manang, was discovered in 1950 during an expedition led by Maurice Herzog while searching for Annapurna I. The first successful ascent of Tilicho Peak (7,134m/23,406ft) was achieved by French climber Emanuel Schmutz in 1979, using the Northwest shoulder route.

Compared to other mountains, Mount Tilicho is considered slightly challenging to climb. There are two routes to reach the base camp. One option is through the Marsyangdi valley, and the other involves crossing the Mesokanto Pass (5,300m) in the Kali Gandaki valley. From the top of the Mesokanto pass, trekkers can enjoy a serene view of Tilicho Lake (4,800m) and several other mountains.

The Tilicho Peak base camp is located near the 5,200m high Tilicho Dam. The ascent from the base camp to Camp I (5,800m/19,029 ft) is quite steep. Camp I is situated on a shelf just above a 45-degree mixed rock and ice field under the Northwest arm. Moving further, Camp II (6,100m/20,013 ft) is positioned on the shoulder of the mountain. Beyond Camp II, the path leads directly to a 60-degree slope, culminating at the summit of Tilicho Peak.

It is crucial to exercise caution while climbing due to the potential risk of avalanches on this route. Careful and deliberate steps are necessary to ensure a safe and successful ascent.
